Why some Apple software irks me

As far as Apple goes I am usually very pleased and I happily use an iPhone and MacBook Pro. I personally love their operating systems, and don’t mind sacrificing personal customization in exchange for excellence and uniformity. There are times when I get an itch to customize my iPhone and consider jailbreaking, but I never do. That being said, what I don’t like are their individual products like iTunes, and iPhoto. Why? Two words: unnecessary abstractions. I like folders. Apple seems to think the word folder is a low-level, computer-nerd term and that in order...

Thoughts about my addictions

I think i am finally gaining some understanding on an issue that I have wondered about a lot during my life. On and off I have battled with one of the most devastating addictions the human race has ever known. Video games. I could find comfort by comparing myself to other addicts who were in even deeper than me, but i always wondered if i just needed to walk away from them forever or if i could enjoy them casually without thinking about them all the time. Why do I feel bad about playing them? Is it because my mom told me they were bad for me when I was growing up and...

Why I like Shigeru Miyamoto

Q. You’ve had so much success over almost 35 years. Does that create additional pressure for you, compared with how you felt when you made Donkey Kong? A. I don’t really think about it in those terms. There are sort of two kinds of people. There are the people who say, “Oh, we can repeat that success.” And there are the people who say, “We’re never going to see anything as successful as that again.” What I always say is: “We can make the rules ourselves. Nobody has done it before. We can make it up as we go along.” And that to me is a lot more fun. Share...

Neutral thoughts about elections

Okay, so you are probably skeptical that I can really write something neutral about elections, but I really do not want to talk about parties or candidates. In fact I don’t enjoy talking about them very often. In general I feel mostly helpless and realize that the only I reason I voted was to give myself a pat on the back. My vote won’t matter be it red or blue because I live in a state that doesn’t have a close vote. One thing I keep hearing from both parties is that the other party is ignorant or mislead and to that point I want to offer some ideas that...

Killing the Quick Brown Fox

The ever famous sentence for displaying fonts, ”The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog”, has been a target of mine since I was in middle school. I have always wanted to find a more concise way to use every letter in the alphabet. I have yet to do so in a logical way. I have however produce my first three attempts. I encourage anyone and everyone to begin using these alternatives when displaying your awesome fonts. Also if you have already been working on this for years like I have feel free to leave your sentence in the comments. 1. The whacky squid...

Latest doodles

I like to doodle. Usually they end up on napkins, bills, and sometimes important documents. Ever since a got a Wacom tablet I have moved all of my doodling digital. This means I don’t throw away everything I do anymore! I thought I would post a fewsketches I did tonight. For some reason a lot of the color was effected when I exported these. I think it is because they have transparent background, when the color used to play off the white background it is now turned to gray. Share...

Thoughts about timing

A lot of times people (Christians) ask questions about the morality of a particular act or thing. Sometimes we hear answers that might sound too opinionated like, “I don’t care how you slice it, no one should ever do that act, see that movie, read that book, or play that game.” Other times I hear answers that are more thoughtful like “I don’t think that’s inherently evil, but what are the motives behind it?” But rarely do I hear a discussion about timing. Cool unit circle clock! Timing is two fold. The first is immediate timing....
